Alcohol and Drug Free Workplace

Skilled union construction workers, together with their union contractor partners, have been advocates of meaningful policies to ensure an alcohol and drug free workplace for more than 20 years.

These efforts include mandatory pre-employment testing as well as random, post-accident and testing for reasonable cause. We support education programs on alcohol and drug awareness for both workers and supervisors.

We also provide a method for workers to explain or question test results and information on how and where to seek treatment if needed.

Saying you are a drug-free company is easy – everyone does it. However, having meaningful programs takes a real commitment of time and money.

Below are some local union affiliated testing and education organizations and the state of West Virginia enacted law regarding testing for workers (union and non-union) on tax funded construction projects. At the Federal  level, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration has created a Toolkit.  Use the Drug-Free Workplace Toolkit to support workplace health and safety by creating and maintaining drug-free workplace policies and programs. These policies and programs may include preventing the misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; addressing substance misuse within the context of workplace health and wellness programs; and providing intervention services for employees and for their families.
